My mom just dropped me a note from Los Angeles (where she’s been living the “FitLife” since I was still sleeping on rubber sheets.) She told me the inspirational story of Taylor-Kevin Isaacs, a trainer at her gym who is working with all kinds of folks with catastrophic spinal chord injuries, including one- Aaron Baker—who was paralyzed after a motocross accident and told he would never walk again. Well, thanks to intense training and determination, Aaron and a group of others who have fought back from these kinds of injuries left LA yesterday on bicycles, on their way to San Francisco, where tomorrow they will embark on the Rise Above Tour, a bike ride across the country!
The ride is to raise awareness and money to build C.O.R.E.- the Center of Rehabilitative Exercise and, most importantly, make sure treatment is within reach of average folks, even after insurance companies have given up.
Here’s a bit from their mission statement:
“Most are not aware of what “health” means until it becomes a necessity. After sustaining a disabling condition or suffering a chronic illness, ongoing therapeutic exercise should become a way of life… Exercise is Medicine. C.O.R.E. provides the opportunity for one to improve the quality of their life. C.O.R.E. is dedicated to each individual client using a scientific approach towards the development of personalized goals. We strive for a structured program that will be a lifestyle enhancement rather than a traditional exercise regime.
The human spirit is a force of limitless power, demonstrated and recognized widely by extraordinary stories in history, which have redefined personal and collective perceptions regarding what is humanly obtainable. Rise Above and thus, C.O.R.E. is a symbol of this spirit. It is a source, a catalyst, which attracts individuals, families, and friends to opportunities of physical health, mental motivation, and spiritual inspiration.”
You can check out the various events they do here, and, it looks like, you’ll be able to follow their travels here.
