So, I had a pretty sucky few days last week. Starting Tuesday, every time after my run, I would have shooting pain in my left hip flexor. I thought it was the beginning of the end of my brief-but-illustrious recreational running career. I took a day off, to no avail. Rob stretched me out good, which helped some. But Friday I was still in horrible pain.
Woke up Saturday– hey, this is getting a little better. Sunday– Wow, hardly any pain at all after my “big run” of 8.35 miles. Hmmm… then it hit me- I’ve been driving Rob’s Subaru Forrester because the Beemer was in the shop. I’d noticed earlier in the week that my quad was hurting because of the angle of the clutch, but the only thing to change between Friday afternoon and Sunday morning was that I hadn’t driven the Subaru.
Needless to say, I am heading into this week with a new perspective on things. Sometimes the answers aren’t what you expect!
Now, ogle my “progress-o-meter”:

NEW SHOES!
Yeah- if you’re running 30/40 miles a week- you need to swap out shoes on a very regular basis. I *think* it’s supposed to be every 2.5-3 months. For reals. I sprained my hip once running down the hill between the Bridge and Baker beach because my shoes were worn out.

Consider getting a cortisone shot. I bet they’ll put it right in your hip. Once, I had tendonitis at the top of my left foot, and couldn’t ski during the first part of skiig season. A podiatrist shot me up, and I was good to go. They can shoot cortisone into just about any body part.

Generally I change my shoes every six months, every 250 miles, or when I start getting unexplained shin splints and blisters, whichever comes first. Usually it’s the shin splints and blisters.

I have to do some mathing to see how long I’ve been on mine, but I think it’s definitely coming up on 6 months.
