Does Anyone Know about Stress Fractures?

So, my left foot has been hurting pretty badly since I went for a massage a few weeks ago and the guy kinda squeezed it funny. (Really? “Squoze” isn’t a real word? Are you kidding me?) It’s been bugging me since then, but I’ve been running on it OK- no pain during, but pain after. My hip is still a little twingy from when I irritated it on the clutch of the Subaru, but it really bothered me last night. I ran from hour house to Zeitgeist (~ 2 miles) before both really got to me, so I got to hobble-jwog back home and hike up Bernal Hill.

Here’s what I’ve got:

- Localized pain over the apex of my left foot when pushing on it and when walking. When running, it usually hurts the first mile or so and then goes away, only to return immediately upon stopping
- Generalized swelling over the top of my foot
- Some bruisy-looking discoloration over the top of the foot

I’m wearing flat shoes with orthotics to work, trying to ice it when I can in the evening, cutting back my mileage considerably this week, etc.

If it IS a stress fracture coming on, I’m hoping I’ve caught it in time (though that 10 miles on Sunday might not have been the best idea. Woops!)

  1. I don’t know about stress fractures- but anyone got some insight into lower back pain??? where the heck did this come from?

  2. Smurf, this sounds exactly like a stress fracture:

Stop running and go to your doctor. Swelling + bruising = bad. And if you did get a stress fracture, you and you doctor need to figure out why — your diet might need serious adjustment and/or supplementation.
