When it feels like you are waking up your body

August 8th, 2008 by Rob T · 1 Comment

Sometimes I forget how energized you can feel when you come out of a slump.  July 21st, I started to come down with a bit of a cold.  (Feeling under the weather, and really low energy.)  I listened to my body and decided to give myself a bit of a rest.  I only worked out 2 days that week.  (I did a hour and a half of yoga on Thursday, and played soccer on Sunday)  I did this knowing I was going into a recovery week where I was going to focus on Core work and stretching.  (6 days of working out, and soccer, but no intense lifting or extreme cardio.  [well aside from the soccer game])

Then Monday came around.  I was a bit thrashed after the rough soccer game we had on Sunday, but committed to kicking ass and taking names with my workout.  [Chest, Back, and Abs]  After an “easier” 2 weeks, and immediately after my Monday workout, my body woke up.  It was as if it had been sleeping for 2 weeks and was rearing to go.  I was no as strong as I would have liked, the numbers in my reps were not as great as in the past, but I hit every exercise hard, and pushed it to the limit.

Tuesday I was sore, but feeling great.  I do Plyometrics (jump training) on Tuesdays, and not only worked on being more explosive but took special care to make sure I was as deep as possible in my lunges and squats.  ROUGH.

Wednesday, I woke up completely sore, and looking to my next workout to really trash the rest of my body.  (My chest, legs and butt were crushed)  This was an arms and shoulders day, and I pushed it again.  I hit this workout so hard that I didn’t have the energy to even do 10 minutes of abs.  Oh Man….  By the end of it I was wrecked;  Sore, tired, and friggen huge.  My body was defiantly awake again.

Yesterday I did want to do yoga, which I think I am going to do as soon as I am done blogging,   But I opted to go out to dinner and slack a bit.  No worries, you gotta take the breaks when your body needs it.  I needed a good rest day, and took it.  I think I was getting sick because I was overtraining a bit, and it was taxing my immune system.

The nice thing about taking a break is when you come back you feel GREAT!  And you attack your workouts with a new found enthusiasm.  Don’t be afraid of listening to your body, even if you are on a set workout schedule.  Push yourself, but know when you need a rest, and come back stronger.

When you do, it feels like you are exploding with energy!  Your body is awake again.

BTW.  I LOVE PANDORA!  http://www.pandora.com/  it rocks.  Listening to the DJ Jazzy Jeff channel right now.  AWESOME!

I just came out of a low-low-OMG-so-tired-low energy phase that had me worried I was entering yet another mono relapse. Couldn’t have handled that, so I’m happy to say that 10 days of rest and no booze at all worked wonders. Went running last weekend after almost 3 weeks of nothing but yoga and was actually shocked that I still had stamina. You’re right..it’s all about listening to your body. I was burning the candle at both ends, and can’t get away with it.
