Nike+ Robbed Me of My Longest Run to Date!

September 17th, 2008 by Smurf · No Comments

Y’all know I love my Nike+, but MAN does it suck when it malfunctions! You may remember just before I broke my foot, I did a 9 mile run that would have gotten me to my goal of 80 miles in the month of June and the Nike+ wouldn’t sync, so I went ahead and ran anyhow, but felt like the run “didn’t count,” thus pushing me to cram in an extra 9 miles in a week and… snap! (Or, in the case of a stress fracture, “series of repeated squeaks.”)

Anyhow, I did a long run on Sunday. When I got to the Presidio Sports Basement to start my run, the Nike+ wasn’t syncing- the same problem it had the time previously. I restarted the ipod a few times and finally pulled the pod out of my shoe pouch and reset it. Something worked and the iPod came back on, so I ran through Chrissy Field and Fort Mason to Fisherman’s Wharf and along the Embarcadero to the Ferry Building and back. It seemed like forever before the Nike+ finally said I’d gone 8.5 miles (my goal.) Forever, being an hour and fifty-six minutes! Which put me at a 14-something pace which is quite slow for me. I assumed maybe I was just dragging more than I thought, or the headwind was worse. I sucked up my disappointment and committed myself to running more workouts at race pace

Fast forward to yesterday, I set the Nike+ to have me run for an hour (vs. mileage, like I usually do.) Ran from our house, down Valencia to Dolores Park, around the backside and up to 16th, to Church, around the block and back home. When I returned, it told me I had gone 1.5 miles with 35-something pace. That was so insane that I figured out I must have put the Pod in my shoe upside down or something, and also got to thinking about my Sunday run.

So I mapped it on the USATF Running Routes site…. I went at least 10.5 miles! A half a mile longer than my longest run EVER, and I nearly missed it! Plus, this puts me at a much closer-to-norm 10:30 pace.

I also had a chance to talk to the nutritionist yesterday about fueling for my runs now that the foot is back to normal. I’ve been taking off a steady pound-a-week since starting the program, and I’m hoping to be able to keep that up despite the upcoming races (though if the weight DOESN’T keep coming off while getting ready for the races, at least I’ll know why.)

In other news, I’m on lunch duty for my friend Sherri’s bachelorette weekend this weekend! Maybe if you’re nice, I’ll post some recipes. I am trying to make some nice, yummy, healthy food that we can take out in canoes and drink with chilled Strawberry Hill.
