We’re about three weeks into the FitLifeSF Challenge, so I thought I’d take this opportunity to introduce you to the participants. We have a nice mix of experience levels and goals, so I think the Challenge will serve its purpose of showing that anyone can make significant changes in only 10 weeks if they set their mind to it.
Jody- (aka Sometime FitLifeSF contributor and head Rocket of the RocketCityDigs blog.) Jody is a new mom who is getting back into pre-baby Go-Go shape. Her goals include tracking all her Points (she’ll be using Weight Watchers for her eating plan) and getting in workouts despite working fulltime and mom-ing duties. She’ll be doing a combo of pilates workouts, home workouts and some wogging on her way up to a possible 5K!
Margaret- Margaret is a busy shopkeeper (if you ever need a quick gift or want to treat yourself to some relaxing bath notions, Bath Sense is the place to go!) Her goals for the competition are pretty run-of-the-mill– to lose those pesky last 5 pounds and tone up– but her methods are purely “Fitness 2.0.” She’ll be using NetFlix for a never-ending supply of home fitness videos to keep her workouts convenient and interesting without boredom. The cost of a month of Netflix is half that of most SF gym memberships, so we look forward to seeing how she does!
Lizzie- Lizzie is no stranger to fitness. We found each other through the family of P90X addicts. In fact, she’s been training for a while to get into the police academy, so she is using this challenge as motivation to stay committed to those goals and maximize her fitness for the purpose of excelling at the grueling physical test they put potential recruits through. She will be focusing on upper body strength in the hopes of getting to the point of doing the perfect pull-up, and hopes to get her endurance up to where 4-5 mile runs are a very comfortable endeavor.
Rob- Rob wants to get his weight under 200lbs, with a stretch goal of 195. He wants to further improve his endurance. He is shooting to get through an entire 60-day Insanity cycle without distractions, and will be augmenting his workouts with Sambo and telling Smurf she’s cute.
Smurf- Smurf is trying to get her weight down to “racing weight” while building cardiovascular endurance for her triumphant return to running following a fibular stress fracture. She’ll be doing a mix of High Intensity Interval Training, weight training and general cardio, interspersed with monthly step-back weeks of Bikram yoga. She is also using the 10 weeks as an opportunity for a full-body “cleanse,” focusing on clean eating and– most daunting– no booze!
Cathy- Cathy’s not as concerned about weight loss as she is lowering overall bodyfat. She wants a flatter stomach and strength gains. She, too, is using this opportunity to incorporate healthy changes like drinking less and making sure to get in a workout 3x/week.
Lauren- Lauren’s main goal is to get in some key workouts each week and eat healthier. She’s looking to hit 2 Bar Method classes (ed note: More power to ya! Ouch!) and one jumprope class per week, plus an additional Pilates class or a run on the weekend.
Philip- Wants to get seriously ripped so he can embark on life as a shirtless circuit boy. His workouts consist of hours dancing at the End-Up in ankle weights and sunning himself on the balcony of his Folsom Gulch loft.
Edit: OK, so it looks like I accidentally got some of P Webb’s goals wrong. Here there are for reals: “My goals are pretty simple: lose body fat, bring my weight down just a smidgen. (I’m @185, 180 would be ideal but that’s my weight from 15 years ago.) I am also looking to gain strength and muscle definition– I am starting to get an ass for the first time in my life!”
So, there you have it! Those are our contestants, and we wish everyone a big fat scoop of resolve and determination to get through the 10 weeks and obliterate your goals… Hopefully we’ll have updates at the one-month mark, so look for that soon!
