Smurf’s Officially Training for the SF Marathon (to help a great cause, too!)
I’ve waited until about the halfway point in my training to announce this– Yes, I am making another go at the San Francisco Marathon! I’m all signed up and hope that July 25, 2010 will see me crossing the finishline without incident! Well, other than the requisite amount of “incident” involved in running 26.2 miles.
I am going to start posting more about my training, the tools I’m using, and how I’ve finally gotten to a point where I feel like a marathon is feasible for me despite having suffered 5 stress fractures since I started running 2 years ago. I know when I was struggling, there was VERY little on the internet in terms of people who had been able to overcome repeat fractures, so I hope I have some insight to share there.
BUT FIRST… I do want to plant the seed that I am honored to have the opportunity to run SF on behalf of a charity my running buddy, Sam, created to honor his autistic son, Jack– OPERATION JACK!
While I don’t think charitable tie-ins are AT ALL necessary for a person who wants to undertake a marathon, it certainly has helped me to have an added inspiration. Sam is running 60 marathons in 2010 for his son. Jack spends hours in therapy every day and struggles just to get a point across. Surely I and my janky bones can run a few miles!
As such, you are invited to attend a FUNDRAISER to help raise money for this worthy cause:
Where: Stray Bar 309 Cortland at Bocana, Bernal Heights
When: Sunday, June 20 1-6PM
$20 gets you BBQ made by Smurf and all the PBR you can drink plus 5 raffle tickets. Or you can do just beer or just BBQ for $10. Or just raffle tickets for a buck each. Raffle prizes are going to be awesome, we’ve already got some stuff from Camelback and Clif– let me know if your company might be interested in contributing to the raffle.
There will also be a Beer Pong tourney and the proper debut of the tiki drink every runner loves to hate… The Lake Merced Bowl!
If you can’t make it to the Beer Bust but would like to donate to this great cause, you can do so at my fundraising page here:
