US Half Marathon Race Report 2009- Please help us get some answers

USHalfDear Friends: Following is my race report from the 2009 US Half Marathon. This was written a few hours after the race, when I was still flying high on a totally unexpected PR, and before it became quite obvious through internet uproar concurring with my Garmin results that this race was short.  In the past week, Project Sport has been ignoring emails and blatantly deleting all inquiries about the length discrepancy off of the US Half Facebook page. In fact, they now delete me from being a “fan” of the page- yet still can’t take the time to offer any response at all to those of us who noticed the course was short.  Please, if you feel that race directors should be upfront with the runners who pay for their races, send an email to info@projectsport.com or DM @RyanDawkins on Twitter asking that they respond to the concerns. I will keep this site updated, as I have had a few conversations with the USATF about this situation, but for now- as much as I love this race- I cannot in good faith suggest that anyone else who wants a legitimate Half Marathon benchmark race run this one.  And, the race organizer’s bedside manner is, frankly, appalling. Race Report after the jump…

We are back!

After a complete week away in the Caribbean (and yes, it was “ON A BOAT!”), we are back to follow up on all the comments which have come on while we were away.

Also, just as a FYI, cruises are not conducive to being fit. No matter how good your intentions may be, the lure of booze and food will overtake you. (Well, mostly the booze) Add to that “Travel Bloat” and you will have all the inspiration you need when you get home!

Sunday: Sambo
Monday – Saturday: More of Shaun T’s Insanity

Gotta get back on that horse!

And one last thing.  When you are on a cruise, don’t be on the boat that the Carnival Cruise line Flag Ship decides to run into.  Though a great conversation piece, it was a bit off putting.

Plate to Plate 5K Race Report: Listen to the Chocolate Starfish of Doom

I ran the Plate to Plate 5K today in San Francisco. I’ve been back from my stress fracture about a month or so, and thought it would be fun to get a 5K under my belt while I (thought I) had more speed than endurance. Plus, some fine ladies from Stray Bar were running, so it was a no-brainer.

Bit of background on goals: I’d wanted to A) Run at about 7:40 pace; B) Get in on the low side of 24:XX, but definitely 24:XX, or C) Know that I gave it all I’ve got, which barfing would be a pretty good clue.

San Francisco Marathon Second Half Race Report

I’ve been looking forward to July 26, 2009 for the past year.  Last year, marathon Sunday found me nursing a stress fracture of my left foot after only a few months into my new “hobby,” so Rob and I went to Pork Store on 16th for breakfast and to spectate.  I committed that, on July 26, 2009, I would be running the full San Francisco Marathon.

Fast forward to March 23, 2009, when I started my official marathon training program- a somewhat modified version of Pfitz’ 18/55.  Through a combination of doing new types of speedwork that I wasn’t used to, and pushing to hit paces vs just being concerned about mileage, by March 31st I’d developed extreme pain in my right hip and left shin that were later diagnosed as “stress fractures” (though, more correctly, “stress reactions.”)  Whatever semantics you want to put on it, only a week and a half into my training the marathon was out.  I was relegated to joining the Y for pool running, lap swimming and hitting the HELL-iptical.  To add insult to injury, I was laid off 3 days after my diagnosis, and all I could think the whole time I was in with HR was, “Man, with no job, I could have had an EPIC training cycle!”

UCSF RunSafe Clinic Review

(If you are following this blog cronologically, I realize this one is WAY out of date.  The clinic happened in March and I just realzied I never published this review.)

I signed up on the RunSafe website for the clinic after finding it on Yelp.  Before signing up, they had me fill out a few questionnaires online, and then I got a call from the director to answer any questions and I signed up.  It was $175 and took me about a month to get in (they happen every other week and there are spots for four runners in each clinic, so they fill up pretty quick.)

My clinic took place March 10.  I had been feeling under the weather since Sunday night, so was really stressing out about it, not knowing how much I would need to “perform” to make the most of it.  There were 4 stations:

Looking to ‘Achieve Supreme Longevity’?

Well, I can assure you that you won’t find it in this press release from “Nutriquality.”  Geez, oh man, just skimming this thing took 5 years off my life. I can’t imagine what would happen if I actually ordered the E-book.

(As a PR person in my dayjob, I collect clusterfuck press releases like this.)

Some highlights include:

Nutriquality health supplements is revealing future plans to upload a new E-Book landing page that allows consumers to purchase and capture all the concepts of our online health experience in one short digital E-Book. In addition, this E-Book provides instructional videos that dismiss any questions about the contents of the E-Book.”

They plan to upload a landing page?  So, even if I were interested, there is nothing I can view or purchase today?  And, I appreciate the forethought put into this part… Have questions about the E-Book?  The E-book will answer any questions you may have about the contents of the E-Book, so do purchase the E-Book to find out more!

“Nutriquality’s understanding of health fitness, food and the formulation of it’s corresponding products is unique in that we not only understands the science of kinesiology and food on a cellular level but rather comprehend how to present it to others in an easily understandable representation.”

“Nutriquality’s health fitness E-book not only allows you to read text in regards to what a consumer need to do but rather we provide instructional videos that walk a consumer step by step through all the book processes. Conversely, if you happen to be an individual whom visually learns better than reading this will be optimal.”

And… THE DOOZY!

“Furthermore, this is all presented in a way that makes it comprehendible to the average Joe, rather than the all to common expensive let down that seems to be in a foreign language even a code breaker struggles with.”

Well, as long as they understand their core competency is clear communication…

ING Can Suck It – Back out of Bay to Breakers

In case you haven’t heard, ING is trying to ruin Bay to Breakers and the supes are stepping in to try to find a happy medium, but it looks like ING won’t be happy until every last ounce of life or “San Francisco-ness” is sucked from the event.

Did they not do ANY research into what this event was before they signed on as sponsors?  THE EVENT HAS FLOATS, DRINKING AND NAKED PEOPLE IN IT!
