Looking younger isn’t just about working out

I love this pic

For some people looking good seems to come naturally, and I sure do wish I was one of those people.  I work hard for looking the way I do.  (If only I did look good)  Working out is as important as getting enough sleep is as important as eating right, etc.  These are only pieces of the overall puzzle.

P90X Doubles, a day after a SAMBO Seminar. OWWWWW

So this morning I began my two-a-days, an even more intensive version of P90X classic.  The thing that makes it tougher than normal is the 3 added cardio sessions a week.  The program has me doing “Cardio X” in the morning, then the standard hardcore work outs in the evening.  Well, if you have been reading along, I pretty much thrashed “Cardio X” in an earlier post, and my mind changed this morning.  Alone, this workout is pretty lame, but as a supplemental work out, it seems to be perfect.  I must say, early this morning it kicked my ass.  (I really hate working out in the morning)

Now, after the beating I took yesterday (SAMBO Seminar) I expected to feel like complete crap this morning, but I felt pretty damn good.  Then I worked out, and after powering through it, I felt much better.  I really needed to get the joints moving this morning.

Day 2 of the SAMBO Seminar

Serge trying to rip my arm off

Today was dedicated to ground fighting.  After a 5 hour day of throwing and being thrown by Serge, I will admit I was concerned about the condition of my body.  Much to my delight, Igor took us through about an hour of warm ups.  It was great, and just what I needed after yesterday.  We went through a number of stretches and exercises I knew, and a number I have never done before.  After we finished, I was ready to go for 3 hrs of ground fighting.

I have to say I lucked out again on day 2.

Post 100! Wow, we have done 100 of these things.

I guess it is fitting that I get to do the 100th, especially after the day I have had.  (Though Smurf really does deserve this prestigious spot, as she has nearly double the posts I do.)

Well, to my day.  I got up this morning WAY early, I mean, 8:00am the day after the 4th of July. (Yilkes)  I did this so I could be ready for the 1st day of a SAMBO seminar run by Igor Kurranoy.  I expected a rough time, and it met every expectation I had.  The first 2.5 hrs were all Jacket throws, and not soft pansy throws.  Every throw was a bone jarring, rib cracking, body bruising, concussive slam to the ground.  (I think I was thrown 300+ times today)  Now, had I worked with anyone else, I may have gotten off easier, as a poorly executed throw can hurt, but a perfectly executed one is guaranteed to.  So, I spent the entire day working with Serge Gerlach, the guy who is currently teaching me SAMBO.  (Yeah, he is real good, and he doesn’t botch a throw often)

Yesterday was Tony Horton’s Birthday (July 2, 2008)

Tony Horton

Not the baseball player, the personal trainer and P90X front man. So, why do I mention this to the masses? Well, because at 50 years old, this guy is in better shape than most 20 year olds. Amazing. Fitness wise, I aspire to be in the kind of shape he is in.

To me, seeing that it is possible to be in amazing shape at 50 is truly inspiring. To be able to be fit enough to not only look good, but stay athletically competitive is what I want. My hat is off to Tony Horton! Happy Birthday, and I hope this is his best year ever.

(As a side note, I’d ask how he does it, but he pretty much explains it in his videos. P90X will keep you young!)
