There are a lot of great articles about diets on the web, and the hardest part is trying to separate fact from fiction. The other day my brother called me up asking about the validity of something called “Isagenix”, another fad diet his wife has decided to give a go. (I love her, but she jumps on a fad diet faster than a fat kid does cake) Though I will be referencing other fad diets, I do want to focus in on “Isagenix”. (For Now)

For some people looking good seems to come naturally, and I sure do wish I was one of those people. I work hard for looking the way I do. (If only I did look good) Working out is as important as getting enough sleep is as important as eating right, etc. These are only pieces of the overall puzzle.
As someone who has always considered herself “fit,” it’s easy to sit around patting myself on the back, turning a blind eye to the few extra pounds that have crept on. After all, I exercise often, eat healthy foods and a variety of fresh and organic vegetables, very very rarely (never, except in dire straights) eat fast food, etc. I find comfort in thinking I must be in the upper percentile of healthy living, and thus must be A-OK.
That comfort may be misplaced, though, as studies are showing more and more that weight is important. As I mentioned before, I am apple-shaped which, espcially for woman, can mean increase heath risk.
And now this study from the Journal of Internal Medicine reinforces the idea that it IS important to consider weight in reducing risk factors overall:
“… although physical activity definitely helps improve cardiovascular health, such exercise does not “eliminate the negative effects of being overweight.”
Just a little food for thought on this Monday morning.
Edit: Find a more in-depth, deep-dive on the study findings at the Junk Food Science blog. While I find the explanation of the study methodology interesting, I have to say the writing smacks of, “This is isn’t true, it’s perfectly fine to be overweight- don’t let science tell you otherwise!” I’m not sure if the author of this blog is telling people being at a healthy weight isn’t important, or just seems like she’s handing out “OK to be overweight, don’t worry about it” cards on a silver platter.
As Heather (Smurf) said in the first post, the nature of this blog (and soon to be full blown web site) is to give our friends and other like minded people a place come and share successes and ideas. As 2 people who are concerned about living fit (and well!), we have found an abundance of health/fitness information out there that works well if you don’t want to enjoy your life. We are looking to find that middle ground, the place where you can be fit, have time to do the things you love, and still not give up great food and drink. (Moderation people!)
So, contribute and help us start a new online community where we can share what works, what doesn’t and new fun ways to not only be fit, but to get the most of the life you want to live!
(Ok, this is the last time I sound like a marketing person, all other posts will be much more informal!)
