SF Marathon Training Week 3: HELLiptical!

Week 3 of marathon training really sucked, since my right hip and left shin are still giving me problems.  Honestly, I got mentally off my game more than anything, so didn’t spend nearly as much time on the elliptical as I should have… and certainly not as much as I feel like I did!

Monday: Upper Body

Tuesday: Tried running/walking, made it maybe .75 of a mile but the pain was still extreme

Wednesday: Elliptical

Thursday: Elliptical, + arch trainer, + bike (bike hurt the hip)

Friday: Laaaaazy

Saturday: Moooopy

Sunday: Craaaaanky.  Did walk around the city some, though.

So, this week so far, I am forcing myself back on track whether my hip and shin agree or not.  I did some pool work yesterday, will try to run again today (and have faith that I’ll be able to!) and, worst case, I have an appointment with my sports med doc tomorrow morning so should have some answers and a plan moving forward.

It’s Too Early for this Crap!

So, week two isn’t going as planned.  I had to abort yesterday’s scheduled 8 mile run just .15 miles in because my right hip flexor and left shin were getting trapped in an excruciating Giggle Loop whereby one would prompt the other to ever-increasing levels of suck.

I’ll be on the eliptical today, if my hip can handle it.  Boo!

Temporarily Hitching a Ride on the Brokewagon

So, there was a lil’ bit of an issue on my 15 mile run on Sunday.  Namely, my ankle, which had previously been only a “whiny bee-yatch” on the Smurfway Express to Half Marathon Greatness, decided to completely crap out on me at mile 10 or so.  This could have been blamed on any number of things:

1) Very low energy starting out.

2) Recently switching from Asics which tore the holy hell out of my feet to Infinitis, which, while better, weren’t going to make up for a couple week’s damage.

3) Untested decisions which, among other things, took me down a 300′ trail on the other side of the Bridge, only to hit a dead end and have to hightail it 300′ back up.

But… doesn’t the run look oh-so-very-pretty on the satellite view?  I’m currently at home RICE-ing the ankle and hoping you’ll send some healing thoughts my way.  My race is only 2 weeks away… I need all the help I can get!

Does Anyone Know about Stress Fractures?

So, my left foot has been hurting pretty badly since I went for a massage a few weeks ago and the guy kinda squeezed it funny. (Really? “Squoze” isn’t a real word? Are you kidding me?) It’s been bugging me since then, but I’ve been running on it OK- no pain during, but pain after. My hip is still a little twingy from when I irritated it on the clutch of the Subaru, but it really bothered me last night.

Hip Flexor Pain from Running? Think Again!

So, I had a pretty sucky few days last week. Starting Tuesday, every time after my run, I would have shooting pain in my left hip flexor. I thought it was the beginning of the end of my brief-but-illustrious recreational running career. I took a day off, to no avail. Rob stretched me out good, which helped some. But Friday I was still in horrible pain.

Woke up Saturday– hey, this is getting a little better. Sunday– Wow, hardly any pain at all after my “big run” of 8.35 miles. Hmmm… then it hit me- I’ve been driving Rob’s Subaru Forrester because the Beemer was in the shop. I’d noticed earlier in the week that my quad was hurting because of the angle of the clutch, but the only thing to change between Friday afternoon and Sunday morning was that I hadn’t driven the Subaru.

Needless to say, I am heading into this week with a new perspective on things. Sometimes the answers aren’t what you expect!

Now, ogle my “progress-o-meter”:
