I’d Trust a Skinny Chef

It’s no secret– Rob and I love a good five-course tasting menu with wine pairing and facemeat. At least I love the facemeat part.  We live in San Francisco, where such offerings are served up from the backside of taco trucks and popping up in nearly every underutilized storefront in the City, so how could we not?  It’s figuring out how to do that and stick to health and fitness goals that proves a challenge.

Food and Wine Magazine provides a peek at the strategy of folks who make a living at it– top chefs (only one of the actual Top Chef variety) who have lost weight and kept it off while working in such tempting environs (and, it bears mentioning, working hours that would have even most dedicated dieter crying Uncle.)  If these guys can do it while surrounded by food that people wait months to taste, certainly you can find a few tips to conquer the breakroom snack machine, happy hour buffet and occasional Whole Hog tasting menu.

Project Trish: My Goals “Do You Know Where You’re Going To?”

Trish Circa Size 8 I wonder if I’m going to start out all my posts with song lyrics. Hmmm… It’s just turning out that way.

Tonight, I wanted to write about what my goals are for this journey.

Overall, for me anyway, it’s not about a number.

My goal is to get healthy, to feel good about myself, to have more energy, not feel so crappy physically all the time. I have aches and pains someone my age should not have, and I know it’s because of the extra weight I carry every day. I’d like to live a longer, fuller life. I’d like to be as healthy as possible going into middle age to prevent serious health complications. (Photo: Trish circa Size 8 )

Yesterday was Tony Horton’s Birthday (July 2, 2008)

Tony Horton

Not the baseball player, the personal trainer and P90X front man. So, why do I mention this to the masses? Well, because at 50 years old, this guy is in better shape than most 20 year olds. Amazing. Fitness wise, I aspire to be in the kind of shape he is in.

To me, seeing that it is possible to be in amazing shape at 50 is truly inspiring. To be able to be fit enough to not only look good, but stay athletically competitive is what I want. My hat is off to Tony Horton! Happy Birthday, and I hope this is his best year ever.

(As a side note, I’d ask how he does it, but he pretty much explains it in his videos. P90X will keep you young!)

What Inspires You to Live Your Best Life?

Days like this I realize just how much I appreciate the positive influence of living with someone who inspires me to be my best self. I feel like a lily-livered douche writing this, of course, because it tends to beg the question, “What? You don’t have the self control and drive to do these things for yourself?  Co-dependent, much?” I don’t think it works quite like that, but thanks for the flashback to high school.

A Spoonful of Inspiration- The Rise Above Tour

My mom just dropped me a note from Los Angeles (where she’s been living the “FitLife” since I was still sleeping on rubber sheets.) She told me the inspirational story of Taylor-Kevin Isaacs, a trainer at her gym who is working with all kinds of folks with catastrophic spinal chord injuries, including one- Aaron Baker—who was paralyzed after a motocross accident and told he would never walk again. Well, thanks to intense training and determination, Aaron and a group of others who have fought back from these kinds of injuries left LA yesterday on bicycles, on their way to San Francisco, where tomorrow they will embark on the Rise Above Tour, a bike ride across the country!
