It has been almost 2 weeks, and my ass has been kicked. I am dealing with the last of it, and hope to soon have a chest clear of phlegm. After being down for 2 weeks, after doing only 2 weeks of my new cycle, I feel like I need to make up ground. SO. I am yet again switching things up. Monday starts a brand new Insanity cycle, then Mid February I am going to bust out my new modified 90 day hell workout. (Maybe with a kettle bell routine thrown in for good measure)

So, there was a lil’ bit of an issue on my 15 mile run on Sunday. Namely, my ankle, which had previously been only a “whiny bee-yatch” on the Smurfway Express to Half Marathon Greatness, decided to completely crap out on me at mile 10 or so. This could have been blamed on any number of things:
1) Very low energy starting out.
2) Recently switching from Asics which tore the holy hell out of my feet to Infinitis, which, while better, weren’t going to make up for a couple week’s damage.
3) Untested decisions which, among other things, took me down a 300′ trail on the other side of the Bridge, only to hit a dead end and have to hightail it 300′ back up.
But… doesn’t the run look oh-so-very-pretty on the satellite view? I’m currently at home RICE-ing the ankle and hoping you’ll send some healing thoughts my way. My race is only 2 weeks away… I need all the help I can get!
Sometimes I forget how energized you can feel when you come out of a slump. July 21st, I started to come down with a bit of a cold. (Feeling under the weather, and really low energy.) I listened to my body and decided to give myself a bit of a rest. I only worked out 2 days that week. (I did a hour and a half of yoga on Thursday, and played soccer on Sunday) I did this knowing I was going into a recovery week where I was going to focus on Core work and stretching. (6 days of working out, and soccer, but no intense lifting or extreme cardio. [well aside from the soccer game])
So, no, I didn’t run anything this year, though I’d secretly harbored hopes to lumber through a half on my ten-mile-max long-run schedule. Nor did contributor RocketGirl (Jody/Muppet.) I was riding the pine with over-aspirational training and a stress fracture, she with a wonderfully though-out training plan that culminated with a sucky luck-of-the-draw case of runner’s knee (she can post more, if she wants.) But I was still up with the birds this morning at 6AM thinking that the runners were just hitting the Golden Gate. Much to Rob’s chagrin, I even opened the curtains to see what kind of weather they were having. I went back to bed, resting easy that it was sunny skies. Those in the race may or may not laugh along with me when realizing that 6AM skies on Bernal Hill might look sunny at first glance, but the grey-bright skies of that hour don’t mean smooth sailing. I woke at 8 to discover grey. Grey, grey, soul-sucking grey like it has been the past few weeks. Bummer! Reading race reports on RunnersWorld.com confirm that it was “Teh SUCK” on the Bridge, with gusting winds and nastiness.
Yeah, yeah, so… I broke my foot. Technically, I have a “stress fracture of the second metatarsal.” Which I’m thrilled to report is also called the “Beckham Bone” after one David Beckham who broke his in a slide tackle trying to win the World Cup. I just broke mine being a dumbfuck.
Here’s the thing… everything you read says, “Don’t increase running by more than 10% of total mileage per week.” “Yes, but I am doing so WELL! Certainly such rules don’t apply to ME!” I think I might have even read something that said, “Even if you are doing well and don’t think this rule applies to you, IT DOES!” It’s not like I intentionally packed on mileage, but I did exceed the recommended rate of increase, and now I’m paying for it.
So, let me put it this way… I have magical powers and can tell that YOU, yes YOU dear reader, should not increase your mileage by more than 10% per week, no matter how great you feel. Trust me. Jesus passed me a note in study hall with your name on it.
