Today I am officially 3 weeks from finishing my latest cycle of P90X. I am calling it quits 3 weeks early and I am OK with that.
I have been forcing myself to work out the last week or so, where I usually am looking forward to getting to the house and crushing a whatever workout is scheduled for the day. It hit me today like a ton of bricks. I AM SICK OF DOING P90X WORKOUTS! I need to really mix things up, and do something completely different.
For the record, it has been almost 2 straight years of doing P90X and it took that long for me to burn out. Impressive! And even more impressive is that I keep seeing gains and improvements in my fitness level. Verdict is; P90X Works! But what next?
I tell you, there is little better than getting back into the swing of things. After being sick last week, today’s work out felt amazing. (OK, after the work out, like 3 hrs or so) I felt like my ass was kicked today and I really had to force myself through. (That still recovering from the flu bit) But when I looked at what I did (YES! I record my work outs as I go. In the words of Tony Horton “How do you know what to do, if you don’t know what you did.” ) I was better than last week before I got sick, and even did better than my first week back.
Not to bad after 4-5 days of the flu.
The big tip here: Don’t work out when you are sick. Your body needs to rest and recover. (Sick being the flu or a bad cold) The harder you kick your ass, the harder the bug will kick your ass. Hard to recover from illness when you are tearing your body apart.

Week 1 down and the only mishap was me not getting Yoga X in. I was thrashed on Thursday after working on a work project all day (until 10:30pm, I know, Crazy!) the rest of the week was just as I planned it out. P90X classic augmented with Sambo on Sunday instead of Saturdays Kenpo X. (Which totally sucks!)
This week, I will hopefully be adding another Sambo work out on Thursday, which means either I do Yoga when I get home late in the evening, or I do Yoga on Daturday. This will eliminate a full recovery day, but I can use it more as a stretching workout than a hard core day. (And yes, yoga can and will kick your ass if you work it right!)
Today was Back and chest again with Ab Ripper X thrown in. I improved on all my reps, and even Ab Ripper X was easier to do. Woo Hoo! If this keeps up, I may have to change out for the ultimate ab work out. The Tony Horton One on One Abs workout. (It looks BRUTAL!)
Wow, a non-P90X post by Rob? Holy…
I have to say that this week Sambo work out was rough. Maybe it was my early rise to go find Smurf at the 1/2 Marathon she ran. Maybe I was still kicked from Back and Legs on Friday. Maybe I am just a wimp. Who knows.
What I do know is that it took nearly 2 hrs for my legs and hips to finally loosen up, and then rolling with Ben and Rob took the rest of the energy I had left. Though my endurance was way better than last week, I was thrashed after working out for 2.5 hrs. Age be damned, I should be able to keep competing, and I will! That is why I do this, to feel young, alive constantly sore.
Speaking of sore, tomorrow is the beginning of week 2 of cycle 4. More chest and back! Oh my!
Today was Day 1 all over again. After a month and a half of being off cycle, working out only 2- 3 times a week, and eating and drinking life a fiend, it felt good to know I was getting back into the crazy work out cycle which is P90X! This will be Cycle 4 for me. First cycle was P90X Classic, cycle 2 was P90X plus, and cycle 3 was P90X doubles (though I stopped doing the doubles 5 weeks in as it was kicking my ass and taking to much time). So, Cycle 4 is back to Classic with a bit of augmentation.
I am throwing in some different work outs. (Weeks 1-3 will have the following changes) Saturday will be my rest day (So none of that crappy Kenpo X stuff), Sunday will be 2-3 hours of fighting (Yeah SAMBO! Gotta get ready for my trip to Russia in May), Tuesdays will be either Plyometrics or Plyo Legs (Tony Horton One on One, it is BRUTAL) and finally Thursday will either be a fight night (SAMBO) followed by Yoga, or just fighting. Depends on how beat I will be.
So, there you go. The new beginning of my fit life, and this time I am taking more care of my eating habits. Time to make sure I am eating properly and consistently. 5 Meals a day and 2500-2800 calories a day. WOW. A lot of work. Sorry SF Karaoke Mafia, I won’t be out as often as I had in the past.
Oh yeah. SKI season is almost here! WOO HOO!
